50% British Airways Transfer Bonus from Amex Membership Rewards

For a limited time, you can get 50% more British Airways Avios when you transfer from your American Express Membership Rewards account.  For every 250 MR point you transfer, you’ll get 300 Avios instead of the usual 200. This offer is good through 11:59 p.m. CT on October 10, 2016.

If your travel plans include British Airways or its partners in the near future, now would be a great time to transfer some of your Membership Rewards points.

In October, 2015, American Express reduced the regular Avios transfer ratio. For each 250 Membership Rewards points you normally receive 200 Avios. Prior to that devaluation, the exchange ratio was 1:1 (250:250). Ultimately, this offer is 20% better than the old regular exchange rate.

British Airways Avios

In addition to its own flights, British Airways has partnerships with a number of other airlines, including partners in the Oneworld alliance. That can offer you a greater choice of destinations for reward flights.

One advantage of the British Airways Avios program is that the number of points required to book reward flights is distance based. This can result in some excellent values with Avios relative to points required with other programs.

For instance, you can use reward points to book short (under 1151 miles) U.S. domestic flights on American Airlines for only 7500 Avios each way. You can also redeem Avios for flights on Aer Lingus. Boston to Dublin is only 12,500 Avios each way in economy. NYC/Washington/Chicago economy to Dublin is only 20,000 Avios.

I plan on transferring some of my Membership Rewards points to Avios during this promotion despite my travel plans for next year being tentative.
