Chase Sapphire Reserve to Limit Priority Pass Guests

In an effort to reduce costs, Chase is reducing some benefits of its premium Sapphire Reserve card.

New Priority Pass Guest Limit

In the “most inevitable change” category is the limitation on Priority Pass guests. The benefit will now match competing credit cards by limiting the number of free guests to 2. Additional guests will incur a $27 entry fee. You can read more about Priority Pass here.

I always felt this benefit was too generous and that it would be the first one to be cut back.

Good Bye Price Protection

Chase is completely eliminating the Reserve’s Price Protection feature. With this feature, Chase would credit you with the difference in price if a purchase you bought using the Reserve was at a lower price shortly thereafter. The recent advent of third party apps that automated the process of scouring the web for cheaper prices and submitting price protection claims made this benefit unsustainable.

No More 3x Points on Travel Credit Eligible Purchases

Chase Sapphire Reserve card holders will also no longer earn 3x points on travel purchases that qualify for the $300 annual travel credit. This is effectively a minor devaluation of the travel credit. You will lose 900 UR points per year. Assuming a minimum value of 1.5 cents per point, that’s at least $13.50 of lost value.

All of these changes will take effect on August 26, 2018.
